Bowled over by Watteau. I prefer the drawings at Royal Academy, but if you visit the Wallace Collection to see his paintings, check out the vestibule upstairs stuffed with wee boxes, their lids adorned largely with charming miniatures of fat women showing off their bottoms.
Watteau’s sketches are fabulous. Meticulous recording of fashions. Apparently he drew all the time, wherever he was. Wonderful use of black and red chalk.
